Most necromancers require several different spells to call spirits. As a rule of thumb, replace the word ‘Spirit’ with the name of the spirit one wishes to call. For instance, Call Wraith, Call Apparition, or Call Shadow.
In Citadel of the Fallen, however, we are only seeing necromancy through Malcolm, and he doesn’t need different spells to call specific spirits. His El’orin, the Other, allows him to call to any type of spirit, regardless of which spell is used. Hence, I decided to use a generic Call Spirit spell in this Wiki.
The process of summoning a spirit from the Astral happens in stages.
- The necromancer needs Spectral Sight active, and must identify the spirit he wishes to call.
- The necromancer uses the Soulstone spell to free a soul from one of his Soulstones.
- The Astral pulls the soul across, creating a weak point. While that is happening, the necromancer uses the Call Spirit spell to pull his target spirit into the world of the living.
Once a spirit has been pulled across, the necromancer must assume control over it. This is generally not difficult, but sometimes, several spirits, or stronger spirits force their way across.
If the necromancer fails to win control, the spirit will almost invariably attack him. If the necromancer does win control, he can direct the spirit accordingly. However, the necromancer must continually spend energy to keep spirit in the world of the living. His magic is essentially operating as the body that protects the spirit from the Astral.
